Award for airport development
The City of Busselton has won the ‘Boosting Productivity through Infrastructure Award’ for the Busselton Margaret River Airport development.
The award is one of nine categories in the National Awards for Local Government. It recognises forward thinking local governments that contribute to the Australian Government’s plan to invest in modern infrastructure to boost productivity.
Later this year one of the nine category winners will be announced as the winner of the 2020 National Award for Excellence in Local Government.
About the Busselton Margaret River Airport development
Busselton Margaret River Airport is located in Western Australia’s south west in a region renowned for top quality wine, world-class surf and international events.
The Busselton Margaret River Airport development included:
- upgrades to the existing runway for Code E aircraft;
- a new 4 bay Code E aircraft parking apron with connecting taxiways;
- upgrades to passenger terminal facilities;
- a new general aviation precinct;
- upgrades to the existing Code C apron;
- new aeronautical ground lighting;
- new car park facilities;
- upgrades to the internal road network; and
- infrastructure to support the development of freight and commercial opportunities.
The airport is well positioned to take advantage of opportunities for new passenger services, freight, tourism and other aviation related activity.
Interstate passenger flights between Busselton and Melbourne were due to start in March 2020. The launch has been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The airport project has previously received the following awards:
- Best Public Works Project Award (Regional). WA Division of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Excellence Awards 2019
- Innovation and Excellence Award Infrastructure Development (Regional). Australian Airports Association National Industry Awards 2018
